The company Richard and Joseph Beck, founded at the turn of the 19th century, produced cameras of very fine craftsmanship. Among these, the Frena models stand out for their quality of construction and technological advancement for their time.
While contemporary detective cameras could load a magazine with a maximum of twelve plates, the Frena cameras used Film Packs with twenty exposures each. The Frena No 0 used the 3 1/2 x 2 5/8 inch format, while the Frena No 2 and Frena No 22 used the 3 1/4 x 4 1/4 inch format, and the Frena No 3 used the 4 x 5 inch format. The model 0 mentioned here could be loaded with two packs, giving it a total capacity of forty exposures.
The metal piece on the front, shaped like a naval anchor, houses the lens in its upper part, the winding knob in the middle, and the aperture adjustment in the grooved lower part.
Adjusting the shutter speeds on this model requires precision and a bit of patience. You first need to open the trapdoor located under the camera. This provides access to the shutter mechanism. You then rotate a notched metal wheel on its axis, and its sharp teeth can be a bit challenging on your finger. This action allows you to scroll through the various shutter speed settings in front of the lens. Once you've selected the appropriate number, you can close the trapdoor.
The bronze-colored tube on the side is used to rotate the magazine containing the film packs. This tube has a bubble level to ensure the camera remains horizontal. When you rotate the magazine, the exposed film sheet is moved to the back of the camera, and a fresh unexposed sheet takes its place.
No. 0 has the same size the No. 00 but this one has only one window on front.
In 1854, two brothers, Richard and Joseph Beck, renamed their London-based optics and microscope company to R & J Beck Ltd after the withdrawal of their third partner, James Smith. The production of cameras began in 1880, and it was in 1892 that the Frena models with their unique system of a notched-edge roll film magazine were introduced.
